Write a blog post in which you explore the 3 kinds of power that Andrews proposes as necessary to successful movements. Use a movement you know about or can imagine as an illustration as we did in class with the civil rights movement and the itgetsbetter.org movement.
Much like how Duhigg explains that three steps are needed to create social change, Andrews describes three steps that use types of different types of power to create change. All three of these, cultural, disruptive, and organization power, need to work together to create movement, rather than relying on one over the others. One example of a movement that used all three techniques to create change was the Women’s Suffrage movement. One of the uses of cultural power in this movement was when women tried to create change on other issues but politicians did not want to listen to disenfranchised groups; this changed the culture of a women’s rights movement by focusing on the need for suffrage. Disruptive power occurred with the acts of defiance, including picketing outside of the White House in order to gain President Woodrow Wilson’s attention and support. Lastly, organizational power was used when the leaders of the movement set up meetings, such as the one in Seneca Falls, NY, worked to educate other women and spread petitions and information about the movement. No one of these acts could have created a widespread and successful movement. Social change requires several steps working one after another or simultaneously, depending on the situation. Leaders must organize and gain supporters, spread information, look for areas of social climate change, and act in ways that leave people with few options other than to support the movement.
